Shopify SEO Audit Checklist for UK Online Stores
A Shopify SEO audit checklist for UK stores, covering VAT display, GBP pricing, schema markup, speed checks and Merchant Centre feed settings for UK merchants.
Use this Shopify SEO audit checklist to review the UK storefront, search visibility, structured data, speed and product feeds.
What to take away
- Run the settings check firststore currency, VAT display and shipping rules shape both the storefront and your Merchant Centre feed.
- Clear crawl and indexation faults before rewriting copy, because thin collection pages cost more traffic than weak product descriptions.
- Add Product, Offer and BreadcrumbList schema, and keep GTIN, brand and condition fields accurate in both page and feed.
- Treat UK consumer information rules and cookie consent as audit items, not a separate compliance project.
Shopify SEO audit checklist
- UK store settings:In Shopify admin, check Markets, Taxes and duties, Shipping and delivery, Checkout and Notifications. Verify the UK market, GBP pricing, VAT display and shipping information shown to customers.
- UK compliance:Check that delivery costs and cancellation rights are available before purchase under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Review cookie consent against the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and the ICO's guidance.
- Crawl and indexation:In Google Search Console, review the Pages, Sitemaps and Core Web Vitals reports. Submit Shopify's
/sitemap.xmlin the Sitemaps report, then crawl the store with Screaming Frog SEO Spider; inspect filtered and paginated collection URLs, keep useful pages discoverable and direct duplicate filter variants to the preferred collection page. - Product schema:Check the rendered markup with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Confirm Product, Offer and BreadcrumbList schema and keep product identifiers consistent with the feed.
- Speed and storefront:Test the homepage, a product page and a collection page in PageSpeed Insights, including on mobile. Check whether apps and scripts are adding unnecessary page load.
- Merchant Centre feed:Check GBP, VAT treatment, price, availability, delivery, GTIN, brand and condition, and resolve disapprovals where the feed does not match the landing page.
Why a standard audit misses Shopify
Shopify generates much of the markup for you, so an audit separates what you can edit from what the platform controls. You can change theme templates, collection logic, apps and feed data. Core product URL patterns are fixed.
Check UK store settings first
Audit the UK-facing settings in Shopify admin first: Markets, Taxes and duties, Shipping and delivery, Checkout and Notifications. Check how they affect what UK customers see and the information passed to your feed.
UK Store Settings Checklist
- Set currency to GBP
- Confirm market shows pounds
- Decide VAT display rule
- Enter delivery charges and windows
- Compare sitemap with indexed URLs
The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 require distance sellers to give delivery costs and cancellation rights before a sale. Keep that on the product page, not only in the footer.
Clear technical faults before content work
Start in Search Console. Compare submitted URLs with indexed ones and note the gaps. On most Shopify stores those gaps are collection pages, filtered collections and paginated URLs with near-identical titles. Fix these at template level before rewriting copy, and this guide to how to optimise category pages covers the template choices.
Filtered collections multiply quickly: colour, size and their combination each become a crawlable URL. Choose which filters deserve an indexable page and block the rest with robots.txt rules or canonical tags.
Schema markup for Shopify products
Check the rendered HTML rather than trusting an app's settings screen, then add what is missing in theme.liquid or a snippet. Most themes output basic Product markup; fewer get Offer details right.
Product Schema Fields
- name
- image
- sku
- brand
- offers with priceCurrency GBP
- availability
- valid price
- BreadcrumbList
Keep GTIN and MPN accurate where you hold them. A mismatch between page and feed is a common cause of Merchant Centre disapprovals. These product page SEO techniques cover titles, images and internal links.
Speed and currency on the storefront
Shopify's hosting is quick; your theme and apps decide the rest. Review widgets, chat tools and tracking scripts load on every page. Test a product URL, a collection URL and the homepage in PageSpeed Insights, and record mobile scores as you go.
Currency switchers can create duplicate URLs showing the same product at different prices. Point the canonical at the GBP version and do not treat a currency variant as a separate language in hreflang.
Feeds and Merchant Centre for UK sellers
Merchant Centre reads price, availability, delivery and tax from your feed. Set it to GBP and state whether prices include VAT, because the feed price must match the landing page.
Search Console shows the queries you rank for; Merchant Centre shows feed disapprovals. When a product vanishes from both, fix the feed error first. This comparison of how ecommerce SEO compares with Google Shopping shows where each channel earns its keep.
ONS retail industry data publishes monthly figures on the online share of retail sales, a steadier benchmark than a competitor's targets.
Consent and analytics
Cookie consent changes what your analytics can record. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) apply to cookies and similar technologies in the UK; non-essential analytics and advertising cookies generally require consent. Follow the ICO's UK GDPR guidance on the consent standard, and remember that consent mode limits the query data in your reports.
Common questions
Does VAT display affect Shopify SEO?
Indirectly. Google compares the price in your structured data with the price on the page, and a mismatch can remove rich results.
How often should I run a Shopify audit?
Check settings and feeds quarterly and indexation monthly, because new apps and collections create URL problems quickly.
Do I need an app for Shopify schema markup?
No. Theme code gives more control, though an app is reasonable if you cannot edit theme files. Watch page speed if you stack several.
Can the default Shopify sitemap rank on its own?
It helps, but it does not fix thin collection pages or filtered URLs. Treat it as the starting point for the crawl comparison.
