Strategy

Part of A practical guide to building an ecommerce SEO strategy

Why an ecommerce SEO planning template keeps store work honest

A reusable ecommerce SEO planning template for UK store teams, with fields for page mapping, technical work, owners, budgets, measurement and quarterly reviews.

What to take away

  • Start from a dated rule setthe ICO's direct marketing guidance, which sits under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, sets the consent rules your email and remarketing plans depend on.
  • A template fixes four thingsthe objective, the budget line, the owner, and the review date.
  • Compliance checks belong in the plan, not bolted on later, because claims and consent carry legal weight.
  • Build the plan around page types you can actually maintain, not keywords you cannot service.
  • Review quarterly and rewrite the assumptions, not just the task list.

Why a written plan beats a task list

A task list tells you what to do this week. A plan tells you why, who owns it, and what you will stop doing if the budget moves. For an ecommerce SEO plan, that difference matters because stock, seasonality and paid media all compete for the same hours.

Objective as number and date

  • £400monthly content support
  • 15%rise in non-brand organic sessions
  • 31 Marchmeasurement date

Write the objective as a number with a date. For example, a team paying £400 a month for content support might target a 15 per cent rise in non-brand organic sessions by 31 March, measured in its own analytics. That is a labelled illustrative example, not a benchmark.

The template should also record what counts as evidence. Decide in advance which reports you will read, how often, and who challenges the numbers when they disagree. Anyone opening the file three months later should be able to tell whether the plan is working. A plan that cannot be checked is a wish list with formatting.

Set the scope before the keywords

Decide which page types the template covers: category pages, product pages, guides, or a mix. Each type needs a different brief, a different update rhythm and a different success measure.

If you skip this step, the plan quietly becomes a blog calendar. Our ecommerce SEO strategy and planning guide for 2027 sets out how scope, budget and measurement fit together, which is worth reading before you commit a quarter's spend.

List the page types in one table with columns for owner, update frequency and success measure. Anything you cannot fill in does not belong in the plan yet.

Ecommerce SEO fields and workstreams

Use one row per planned action. Copy these fields into the plan: page type or page group; page URL; target query and search intent; current state or baseline; issue or opportunity; planned action; dependencies; owner; budget line; timing; success measure; evidence or report; status; and review date.

Create rows for the SEO work that applies to the store, including:

  • Keyword-to-page mapping.
  • Indexation, including faceted navigation.
  • Canonical tags and redirects.
  • Schema (structured data).
  • Internal linking.
  • Product variant and out-of-stock handling.

Use Google Search Console to check search performance and indexing information, and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to track organic sessions and conversions. Record the report and date range used as evidence, so the reviewer can compare results with the baseline.

Put compliance in the plan itself

Marketing claims and email consent are not legal footnotes. The ICO's guidance on direct marketing and electronic communications explains when you need consent and how to record it. Add a line to the template for where consent evidence lives.

For claim wording, the ASA's AdviceOnline library for marketers covers common advertising rules, including how offers and comparisons should be presented. For UK advertising, record review against the CAP Code (the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing); for environmental claims, check the Competition and Markets Authority's Green Claims Code.

If your store sells across borders, check the FTC's competition and consumer protection guidance before reusing US-facing copy on a UK site, or the reverse.

Name the person who signs off new claims. When a promotion, price match or sustainability statement goes live without review, correcting it later costs more than the check now.

Budget lines that survive contact with reality

Split the budget into three lines: production, technical work, and measurement. Give each a monthly figure and a named owner. A single blended number hides which line is failing when results stall.

Include a contingency line of roughly 10 per cent for rework. Titles, prices and stock change, and pages built on last quarter's range waste crawl budget when they go stale.

Sequence spend against the trading calendar. Freeze technical changes during peak periods, and put content production before link building if the pages themselves are thin. At each quarterly review, move money between lines rather than raising the total.

A working checklist

  • Objective written as a number and a date.
  • Page types in scope listed, with owners.
  • Budget split across production, technical and measurement.
  • Consent and claims checks recorded, with evidence location.
  • Named sign-off for promotions and product claims.
  • Update rhythm agreed for each page type.
  • Review date in the calendar, with the assumptions to re-test.
  • Stop list agreed, so new work replaces old work.

Common questions

How long should the first plan cover?

One quarter. It is long enough to produce evidence and short enough to correct course before a year's budget is committed.

Should paid search sit in the same document?

Keep it adjacent, not merged. Shared keyword research is useful, but paid and organic need separate budgets and separate success measures.

What if we have no historical data?

Start with a baseline month and record it honestly. Our article on ecommerce SEO strategy mistakes in England covers the common planning errors that show up when teams skip a baseline.

Who owns the template?

One named person, even if several contribute. Shared ownership is the fastest route to a plan nobody reviews.
